Sweet Clean Reads Review: How to Cheat Your Own Death by Kristin Perrin

Posted on July 16, 2026July 16, 2026 by sweetcleanreads

This series is now solidified as one of the top mysteries I will never stop recommending to people.

How to Cheat Your Own Death is the third installment is the third book in Kristin Perrin’s Castle Knolls series. A cozy mystery, dual timeline series that tells the story of Annie Adams in the present as she uncovers clues to a murder as well as uncovers pieces of her family’s past through the journals of her late, Great Aunt Frances.

I have been eagerly waiting for the third book to release since finishing the second book last year, and let me assure you, it did not disappoint. Not only did we get an incredible murder mystery in both the present and the past (no spoilers, but seriously how do authors come up with this??! It’s genius!) but we get to see a bit of romance unfold for both a young Frances during the late 1960’s and Annie in the present day.

The writing is engaging and quick-witted, every time I pick up a book in this series (I’ve read the first two twice) I can hardly put it down. The story is beautifully paced, with no saggy middle, and the most delicious, jaw-dropping payoff at the end.

Here are a couple of quick things to know:

  • No spice, some swearing (doesn’t overwhelm the story)
  • READ IN ORDER (the past follows an ongoing story line and you’ll get more out of it if you read in order)
  • The audiobook is also fantastic featuring two incredible narrators who tell the story from Annie’s perspective in the present and Francis’ perspective in the past
  • Carve out some reading time because you won’t want to put it down!

Absolutely incredible book, an easy five stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
