Sweet Clean Reads Review: The Perfect Rom-Com by Melisa Fergusson

Posted on February 21, 2025February 21, 2025 by sweetcleanreads

Sweet romance is pretty much my jam, if you hadn’t guess by the name of this blog!

But sweet (and clean) romance is surprisingly hard to come by, especially if you’re wanting a book that’s well written. And of course, we want books that are well written!

I don’t want to read a book that’s painfully cheesy just so I don’t have to read sexually explicit material. I still want a well-paced story that’s engaging, full of heart, maybe even a little bit funny.

Enter The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson! It’s sweet, full of heart (I even welled up at a couple of points), fast paced, and free of swearing and sexually explicit content!

Is this book sweet & clean?

Yes! Based on the standards that I use on this blog, I would qualify The Perfect Rom-Com as sweet & clean.

Here’s what that means on Sweet & Clean Reads:

Sweet: the book has an overall message of hope and a happy ending, even if hard topics are addressed

Clean: the book is completely (or mostly) free of swearing, graphic violence, and sexually explicit content

What is this sweet & clean romance about?

Here is the official blurb for The Perfect Rom-Com on Amazon:

She’s written dozens of smash hit novels as a ghostwriter. Too bad no one knows it.

Aspiring author Bryony Page attends her first writers conference bursting with optimism and ready to sell her manuscript with long-shot dreams of raising awareness for The Bridge, her grandmother’s financially struggling organization where she teaches ESL full-time. But after a disastrous pitching session, she stumbles into correcting another author’s work in a last-ditch attempt to make a good impression with the agent. And she, as it turns out, is spot on.

No one is more surprised than Bryony when the agent offers her the opportunity to be a ghostwriter for Amelia Benedict, popular rom-com novelist. Bryony agrees on one condition: she’ll write books for this vain, demanding woman just as long as Jack Sterling, literary agent of the legendary Foundry Literary Agency, works to sell her own book too.

What nobody predicted, however, was that Bryony’s books would turn Amelia Benedict into the Amelia Benedict, household name and bestselling author with millions of copies sold around the world.

And just like that, the Foundry Agency can’t let her go.

But on a personal note, Jack is realizing he can’t either.

The official Sweet Clean Reads review:

The Perfect Rom-Com is…dare I say it? The perfect romcom!

It’s sweet & wholesome full of heart and laugh out loud moments! Jack & Byrony had excellent chemistry from the beginning of the book, even when they weren’t getting along. And once we finally see their friendship develop on page their banter gave major ‘Two Weeks Notice/ vibes – and who doesn’t want a Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock-style in a sweet & clean romance??

The plot with Byrony’s ESL students added heart to the story in an unexpected way and brought tears to my eyes more than once. I love that Byrony had a deeper motivation for wanting to publish her book and this in turn gave Jack a deeper motivation to both champion her work and protect her.

Full disclosure – I think this book leans a little more chick lit/women’s fiction than a full romcom, but there’s plenty of romance & humor along with the rest of the plot!

This was my first book by Melissa Fergusson (I know, I know, what have I been doing all this time??!!) but it definitely won’t be my last! Her writing style creates a world for the reader to dive into; and she nails the pacing in every scene. Plus, Jack was pretty gosh darn sweet…. I mean, the watch scene??? How cute was that? (you have to read it to get it!)

Excellent book, I can’t wait to read more from Melissa Fergusson – I’d love to seen an extended or bonus epilogue of Jack & Byrony in the distant future!

✨ Spice – kissing only
✨ Language – no swearing or foul language
✨ Slow Burn romance
✨ Enemies to Friends to More
✨ Happy Ending!

Where can I find this sweet & clean romance?

As of the writing of this post, The Perfect Rom-Com can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and even in Target! In fact, I went on a hunt and snagged myself a paperback copy just because it was fun to walk into a store and buy a spice free book!

The book is not currently part of the Kindle Unlimited program, but it’s highly likely that you can find it in eBook and paperback format at your local library. And if you can’t, be sure to request it!

The Perfect Rom-Com is also available in audiobook format.

Will you be reading this sweet & clean romance?

Have you ever read a book from Melissa Fergusson? Since writing my original review I’ve read another from her and I have to say, I think she’s quickly becoming a new favorite author for me!
