No spice, and low spice, and high spice — oh my! What does it even mean? Spice is a term to refused to the amount of sexually explicit content in a romance book. In this article we’re going to focus on books with no to low spice (think Hallmark level kissing up to something that’s PG-13).
Now, I don’t know about you but lately it seems like every romance book I come across is basically just an avenue for sexually explicit content. And hey, I’m no prude, but it’s getting kind of excessive. I mean, how many dirty puns with the word “puck” do we really need?
On the other hand, finding no spice romance (books that don’t have little to no sexually explicit content) is something just as difficult. Some of the books are so poorly written, or so cringey, that I can barely tolerate the first chapter.
If this has ever happened to you, then you’re in the right spot! Because today I’m going to share with you some of my favorite low and no spice romance books.
Defining Sweet & Clean Romance
Let’s just define the terms I use here on this blog. I wrote full blog posts about how I define the terms “sweet” and “clean” when it comes to romance books.
But before we go on I’ll give you a quick run down:
Sweet: an overall feeling of hope and happiness, even when heavier topics are featured
Clean: free of swearing (including taking the Lord’s name in vain), sexually explicit content, and excessive violence
That’s how I use those terms on this blog. And for the most part, I think that’s how the book industry uses these terms.
For example, if you see someone describe a book as “clean” you should be able to expect that the book doesn’t have any sex scenes or swearing.
A Shameless Plug for No Spice Romance
This blog initially started as a book review blog. And I do still share about books that I’ve read – all of the romance books are low or no spice.
But in the recent past I’ve also started writing no spice, or clean, romance!
Right now, I write short stories– or as I like to call them, short & sweet romantic treats. These are short romance stories you can read while you finish your morning coffee or wait for your grocery pick-up order.
You can find a complete list of my stories by clicking here. Be sure to check that page often because I’m working on new stories every week! Or you can click below to join my e-mail newsletter (don’t worry, it’s only monthly) and have my short stories sent straight to your inbox.
