Ever found yourself searching for clean romance that isn’t insipid? Or stupid, cheesy, cringey….choose your own adjective.
That line (the one about clean romance being insipid) cracked me up, it’s actually the title for a Reddit thread I stumbled upon once. And honestly, I get it. I think we’ve all been in the situation where we pick up a wholesome romance, only to discover it’s painfully boring.
Or the plot is decent but the dialogue gives you major secondhand embarrassment. Or you read a three hundred page, slow burn romance, only to be rewarded with a single, chaste, peck between the main characters.
I’m here to personally assure you, that not all clean romance is insipid.
In fact, a lot of them are quite good. Really, really good actually. The kind of books that will have you squealing in delight and turning the pages well into the midnight hours. That’s what this blog is all about: quality sweet & clean romance.
Emphasis on the word quality.
And the words sweet & clean, come to think of it.

What is clean romance?

But the short version is this, clean romance is romance that is free of sexually explicit content, violence, swearing, and innuendo.
What is sweet romance?

My short definition of sweet romance is a book that feels lighthearted, hopeful and low stress.
Put all of this together and you get a lighthearted, feel-good book that’s free of Rated R content. That’s a sweet & clean read.
You take a book like that and make sure it’s *quality* and you’ve got a clean romance that isn’t insipid.

A couple of notes about some of the books I shared above:
🔸Dinner for Vampires is a fantastic memoir by Bethany Joy Lenz of One Tree Hill fame. The story details her rise to fame as an actress in Hollywood and her slow descent into a high control religious group, also known as a cult. The audiobook is fantastic (she narrates her own book) and while I do recommend the story (if you like memoirs) it does contain a moderate amount of strong swearing.Â
🔸I Survived the Great Alaska Earthquake is exciting and filled with adventure. My boys and I love the entire “I Survived” series by Lauren Tarshis. Having said that, if you have a sensitive reader this series might not be for them. My boys are 5+ and all loved this book, they’re also not bothered by a little intensity in a book. Please use your parental discretion, but overall I do recommend this book and series.
🔸Mother Culture by Karen Andreola is probably one of my favorite non fiction reads ever. It is specifically meant for Christian homeschool mothers. I’ve been slowly working my way through this book for 2+ years and finished it this month. I plan to start back at the beginning and read through it again, it also makes a great reference book on my shelf when I need a little extra encouragement as a homeschooling mom.
