It’s amazing how much four little words can change your day. Words like “we’re out of coffee” when you get to the front of the line at your favorite cafe. Or when your best friend says, “Me. You. Polar Plunge.”
“Come on, pick up.” Sarah Williams pulled her coat tighter and paced, a futile attempt to keep warm in the January weather.
”Hey—”
“Finally, Laney, where are you?”
“—it’s me, leave a message—” Sarah closed her eyes, it was only voicemail. She was ready to hang up the phone—or throw it into the frozen lake—when Laney Turner’s voice continued, “and if this is Sarah I’m not coming to the Polar Plunge—”
“What?!”
“—but I sent reinforcements.”
